Industry Representatives from AX Holding and Seabank Hotel promoting careers in the tourism industry

Get a life in Tourism

During a three day career exhibition held between the 17th and 19th November, a number of stakeholders from the hospitality industry were available to interact with students, giving day to day experiences of their life in tourism. This three day event was organised by St Aloysius School which saw the participation of the Malta Tourism Authority.

On the first day Ms Annika Formosa, HR Manager at the Hilton, gave on overview about the Hilton chain and how people are trained after they are employed at the Hilton. She explained that careers opportunities are varied with the hotel.

Mrs Michelle Seguna and Ms Daniela Mifsud, HR Manager and Recruitment Officer respectively, also spoke about different career opportunities available at the Westin Dragonara Resort. Employees are also sent abroad for training as the hotel is part of a multinational company.

On the final day, Mr Nicholas Saliba, AX Holdings Group HR and Administration Manager, and Ms Trixie Van Der Kooi, Sales and Marketing Manager at the Seabank Hotel, shared their experience gained from the hospitality industry and how they started working in the industry and how one can progress within the industry.

Apart from own initiatives, schools can also participate in the Choice programme. Choice is designed to give information and expose third, fourth and fifth year secondary students to possible careers in the tourism industry, showing that the tourism industry can be a source of gainful and rewarding employment. The overview presented helps students formulate a knowledgeable opinion about the industry. The Industry Human Resources Development Unit within the MTA is responsible for the development of national human resource development initiatives for the tourism industry. This is done through promoting a service culture within the industry thereby raising service standards; through building a strong liaison with employment, education and training institutions on actions required for the industry; and through the implementation of EU funded projects relating to human resources development.
