Sbandieratori in Malta
Between the 23rd and 7th October 2008, an Italian group of flag bearers were in Malta and gave excellent shows in Mdina, Valletta and Gozo.
Sbandieratori means flag bearers, but these were no ordinary flag carriers; the shows require skill and precision not unlike the more modern military precision drill teams! This kind of display is a very popular and deep-rooted Italian traditions.
The Italian Embassy brought these to Malta with the assistance of the MTA, to be part of the celebrations dedicated to the promotion of the Italian language worldwide. The theme of this year’s awareness week was “The Italia in the Piazza”. Italians love living outdoors, the results of which are the many beautiful ‘piazzas’ all over Italy. Malta being Mediterranean also has the tradition of beautiful ‘piazzas’ and a life style centred round them and the three entertaining performances took place in such locations.
Apart from the Sbandieratori the Italian Embassy organised a week packed with events and activities with a very Italian flavour.
