Birgu lit by candle light.

Birgu Fest 2008

Over the weekend of the 21st to the 23rd October, the Birgu Local Council together with the support of various entities amongst them the MTA, organised yet another edition of the Birgu Fest, the heart of which is the ever popular and enchanting Birgu by Candle Light.

The Birgu Fest kicked off with a full programme of events on Friday, with re-enactments, food and music through various points in the day. Friday’s highlight was the Risottata for charity (see separate piece). Saturday was another day jam packed with activity and the evening’s highlight was definitely the streets eerily lit by no more than flickering candles. The residents as usual cooperated fully in this, making such a beautiful atmosphere possible. The Birgu Fest ended on Sunday.

The attendance to this year’s event was staggering, with thousands of people milling in the streets and taking the opportunity to take a closer look at Birgu’s riches, such as the Inquisitor’s Palace and the beautiful Church of St Laurence. Obviously, the Maltese passion for food was not lacking with the numerous stalls being well frequented; the more adventurous of the numerous tourists in attendance also testing the less ordinary or internationally recognisable fare like bebbux and imqaret!
