The prime minister praised the introduction of low cost carriers and the increased and diverse marketing strategies used by the MTA to promote Malta abroad

2007 breaks all time tourism records

In a press conference held at the Hilton Hotel, the Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi, stated that 2007, “is a record year for tourism ever since the Industry was first established as a pillar of Maltese economy.”

1,243,510 tourists visited our islands last year, an increase of 10.6% on the previous year 2006 whilst the tourist spend increased by 6%. During his speech at the Hilton The Prime Minister emphasised that this astounding success is no mere coincidence and was due to the hard work and strategic decisions made by all concerned. The spirit of teamwork and consultation that has prevailed amongst, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, the Malta Tourism Authority, the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, the Government amongst others, has led to decisions and strategies, which have reaped this success and will ensure future improvement in the industry.

The Prime Minister praised the efforts of all and mentioned various other factors, which have created this record, such as the introduction of Low Cost Carriers and the increased and diverse marketing strategies use by the MTA to promote Malta abroad. This marketing has been instrumental in placing Malta as a top destination in the traveller’s mind. The Prime Minister reiterated that visiting Malta is a unique experience that cannot be repeated elsewhere. Malta is a unique destination in the middle of the Mediterranean, which offers the best opportunity to experience the Mediterranean’s long history.

Other points mentioned where the work that needs to be done in the future to ensure on going success. Malta as a whole must be an improved product, therefore the need to continue investing in our tourism product is essential. The Prime Minster put forward as an example the Bayview Hotel in Sliema, which he had visited prior to the Hilton. The Management has invested heavily in redeveloping the Bayview Hotel and is continuing to do so. Likewise, the Hilton Hotel, which is at the top of its class, is seeking to grow and develop further. Malta must continue to be upgraded, embellished and restored; however, the key players in this Industry remain the people. He emphasised that professionalism at all levels of the employment hierarchy is essential, as they are the face of Malta’s Tourism product.

During his visit to the Bayview Hotel and the Hilton, The Prime Minister was accompanied by, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Dr Francis Zammit Dimech, The Chairman of the MTA, Mr Sam Mifsud and MHRA Chairman, Mr Josef Formosa Gauci.
